So it's free? How does that work?

The costs for the Internet connections and wireless equipment are paid for by the hotspot venues, or sponsors. There's no cost to users who want to use the network, and there are no ads on our community pages.

What do I need to get online?

To use the WirelessToronto network, you need any WiFi-compatible laptop or PDA, and you need to be at one of our hotspots. (You can find our hotspot list here). The first time you use the network, you'll also need to create an account for yourself -- it's free and takes less than a minute.

How do I create a Wireless Toronto account?

  1. From any of our hotspot locations, connect to the WiFi network with the name wirelesstoronto.
  2. Browse to any webpage and you will be redirected to our login page.
  3. Click the Create a Free Account button on the left of the page.
  4. Complete the form to select a username and password and enter your email address.
  5. You now have 20 minutes of Internet access to check your email and click the link included in the automated message we've sent (check your spam folder if the message doesn't come through in 5 minutes, an over zealous spam filter may have caught it).
  6. There's no 6th step. Once you follow that confirmation link your account is live and you can access the Internet from any of our 20+ locations.

What is the SSID (network name) for the Wireless Toronto hotspots?

All Wireless Toronto hotspots use the SSID wirelesstoronto.

Why do I need to create an acccount?

Each user has a unique account so that we know how many people are using the network, to help prevent abuse, and to let users participate on the community pages.

Are wireless connections secure?

Not really. If you're sending or receiving any data that you'd prefer others not see, you should use secure (encrypted) methods. Email and web sessions are particularly at risk, especially passwords. If your email account supports it, you should use a secure (HTTPS) web login, or secure (POP-S or IMAPS and SMTP/TLS) email client login.

When are you going to have a hotspot at <my favourite place>?

Sooner if you can help us pitch them on the idea. You can contact us to suggest a possible venue using our online form or you can email contact@wirelesstoronto.ca.

I have an idea for how to make the network better -- who should I contact?

We'd love to hear it! Email contact@wirelesstoronto.ca.
