The Carrot Common - 348, Danforth Avenue - Toronto

Good news east-enders, The Carrot Common has joined our community wireless network. Coverage favours the central courtyard with the signal reaching into The Big Carrot’s seating area and the organic juice bar that faces Danforth. Drop by next time you cross The Don.

Sierra Grill, across from the Bayview subway station

Hey hey hey, the most recent addition to Wireless Toronto’s Community Network is Sierra Grill. This casual restaurant is conveniently located across from the Bayview subway station (go for the TTC art, stay for the food and WiFi).

Newest hotspot, Sneaky Dee’s

Sneaky Dee's Wireless Toronto hotspot mapWe’re happy to announce our latest hotspot. Sneaky Dee’s, a Toronto institution, is now live for wifi upstairs and down.

Two new hotspots!

Friday, January 12th, 2007

We’re happy to announce two new Wireless Toronto hotspots!

“Think of Lot 16 as the anti-Drake. Lifting its name from NYC’s Lot 61, the minimally appointed, very brown space was once the Elvis Restaurant, the greasiest of spoons. Though the current clientele has moved slightly upmarket – slightly – the no-frills Parkdale attitude remains.” — Now Magazine

Gusto Cafe is in Islington Village — a cute neighbourhood which I’d never been to until today. It seems like a great spot, offering coffee, snacks and sandwiches, and very friendly. It’s a short walk from the Islington subway… drop in if you’re in the area!

We’re happy to launch the first Wireless Toronto venue on the east side! The Renaissance Cafe serves coffee, food and is licensed, and hosts many spoken word and music events. 1938 Danforth Ave, one block west of Woodbine. http://renaissancecafe.ca

Yonge-Dundas hotspot named #1 by Now Magazine

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Wireless Toronto get a mention in this week’s Now Magazine, in the Best of Toronto: Tech piece.

In July, not-for-profit group Wireless Toronto helped give the public a new reason to visit the square. Over the summer a steady flow of laptop users began occupying tables and other corners of the big granite slab. The free WiFi service is giving people something to do other than stare at the advertising or run through the fountains while they take their lunch break and soak up the summer sun.

It’s really great to get this recognition in Now. And they’re not wrong about the steady flow of laptop users in the Square either. I just checked the stats and 850 people have signed up from Y-D Square since we launched there, under four months ago. That’s pretty impressive.

Newest hotspot, Mini Bar

Monday, July 31st, 2006
Mini Bar mapThe Mini Bar is at 107 Mutual Street, just a few blocks East of our recently opened Dundas Square hotspot.

I haven’t been to the Mini Bar yet, but it sounds like a cool place. I found a review on The Martini Boys website, and they seem to like it:

And mini it is; small, charming, sophisticated. In what seems like in the middle of nowhere, the unique little martini bar and patio takes over the previously unused space behind Mutual Street Deli.

This is one of several new hotspots we’ve added to the Wireless Toronto network recently. You can always check out our full network on the WT map.

HotSquare (Yonge-Dundas)

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Don’t have airconditioning? Hate being cooped up at home, tied down by your need for a reliable internet connection, while the city and outdoors beckon?

Well, quit your whining, grab your laptop, and get outside!  As many of you know, you can alreay enjoy free wi-fi at Dufferin Grove Park and St. Lawrence Market.

There’s now¬†another (somewhat more central) location to choose from – Yonge-Dundas Square!¬† The “official” launch of the hotspot is in July, but the¬†wireless network¬†is up and running (for testing, but it seems fine), as of today.¬†

Cool down at one of the tables by the water fountains,¬† watch the tourists bustle around the Eaton Centre, or bring your laptop to Google factoids about The Blob¬†or The Birds while you take in the Square’s (Tuesday) City Cinema nights.

Newest hotspot, this one’s in Kensington Market

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Rice Bar mapOne more hotspot on the Wireless Toronto map today. I’m pleased to announce that The Rice Bar in Kensington market went live today.

If you haven’t been yet I’d suggest checking it out, the food is great, especially if you like rice.

Wireless Toronto party photoJust a quick post to say thank you to everyone who came out to the Wireless Toronto first anniversary party this week. It was a great crowd and everyone’s support and interest is really appreciated. There’s a set of photos online here and more photos here.

Conversations were had, beer was drunk, t-shirts were sold. It was all good.
